Claude Code doesn't remember anything between prompts. Every turn it resends your whole context, and the only reason you're not paying for all of it every time is the cache. Switching models wipes that cache. So every time you flip between Opus and Sonnet mid-session, your next turn gets billed for the entire context window again.
