My family moved out of state when I was a kid and one year we had 30+ guests staying at our house for a week for thanksgiving. Every piece of furniture and floor was slept on. My mom said it was actually the easiest week because there were so many people eager to help. I don’t think she washed a single dish that week.

And that’s a lesson for guests - be helpful and respectful. Sometimes striping the sheets after a stay can be very helpful, especially when a larger group is leaving on the same day.

Just finished the book and here is my question. How do you get people to come? I've found that unless it's very long term friends, people simply don't reply to an invite, or worse, will say yes and then just cancel. I love hosting but struggle to get folks to want to come. I'm new to my city (2years) which is part of it, but I put in a lot of effort and it's hard when people I thought I had a good relationship with just flake out. I'm also 30 years old, so maybe that plays a role. Does this get easier as one ages?

I absolutely love this take! I get so overwhelmed with house guests because I feel like their expectation is that I’m there to wait on them hand on foot. Choosing better guests is an overlooked detail lol

I plan to take the day off before to deep clean, shop and prep, day of is all set for hard prep and party, day after is all cleaning. So really a massive event is 3 business days for me.

The only thing w hosting with sleepovers is if we have very different times going to bed. I can be up late, my husband wants to go early, ppl have children and dogs, some ppl want to drink every night others work out etc. So it’s good if the house is 1. BIG 2. Have lots of bathrooms (in Europe we don’t have one per bedroom…) 3. We are comfortable w noises and also respect the other guests

I think being Southern and a woman has left a bad taste in my mouth re: what hosting is “supposed” to look like (heavy air quotes!!) This sounds fun and casual! Versus the “you’re supposed to wait on guests entirely and do not let them lift a finger” impression of hosting that was pushed on me as a young adult. I think it’s time for me to get your book 😂❤️

You’re lucky that you’re comfortable with people helping. I generally can’t stand people doing anything in my kitchen and when people insist on helping after I say no I get really irritated.
