there is something that happens in the middle of a night feed that i don’t think gets named often enough. somewhere between the first letdown and the baby finally pulling off there is this window. just a few minutes where you are not actively doing anything except holding and waiting and the dark is just the dark and your body is just your body doing what it does now and your mind is finally, briefly, not spinning. and in that window you can go one of two directions. you can go inward, which is where the 3am thoughts live and where i used to end up by default, or you can go outward, which requires something to go toward. i did not have something to go toward for a long time. and then i had the map. and the window in the middle of the feed became something i started looking forward to in the smallest possible way. just those few minutes of opening the app and looking at the lights and letting my mind go toward them instead of inward. toward the mom who is in her own window right now three time zones away. toward the one who is on her second feed of the night and the one who is on her fifth. toward all of them in all their dark rooms choosing to keep going in the same quiet incremental way i am choosing to keep going. outward. toward the lights. it changes what the window holds. #postpartum #newmom #postpartumsupport #momlife #momtok
