Cady :
This was solicited advice.

But Why??? :
"renewing" a relationship with Joe isn't really necessary. Maintaining contact so the kids can get together is a better way to view it. Kids can meet at neutral locations like the park. Yes, it may eblventually become more like sleepovers etc where you and Joe end up as somewhat friends, but that is down the line. Bob may meet his forever person before that and end up forgiving all. You can't predict the future, but you can try to salvage a connection to your kids cousins right now with boundaries and rules. Im sure Bob will understand when he thinks on it for a bit. If not, if he is very upset etc. then suggest he gets into therapy immediately. He has been through something traumatic, his entire reality was shattered. You may need to maintain a distant contact to Joe for a few months until Bob can heal some more. But it all starts with that gentle conversation... good luck.

Isn’t the very definition of solicited advice asking for it?

My Dad had a very close cousin group with kids my age. My brother and I were excluded from it and have never known why. Could have just been they weren't interested or didn't like us. But my step mother was part of it, graciously included. It was pretty hurtful growing up, and remains a baffling mystery after my Dad's death. So definitely get the kids together.

100% agree! I love the simplicity of your advice. My ex husband's siblings and I chose this path btw, when I divorced, I stayed close to his family for the sake of the cousins, they were all very close then, and my now 45 y/o son is still very close to them, I'm so glad it worked out for them.

The kids need to have the chance to grow up together. Those adult relationships may or may not last but the cousins will be cousins forever.

I would agree. The kids may have a hard time understanding why they can't still see their cousins.

TBH Unless they were cheating, I don't understand why Joe's current relationship with Bob's ex wife is such a big problem. At the start it will feel awkward at family gatherings, but they are not the only two with a story of dating an ex after a divorce.

yeah, the kids don't deserve to not know each other due to the dysfunction of the adults in their lives...
