Mom and pop owners of individual houses are very different than individuals owning apartments. I’ve lived in cities up and down the west coast and the only time a mom and pop landlord was bad was when they owned several properties, which really at that point is a chain and not truly mom and pop.

My landlord made it seem like I was doing him a great financial burden asking for a broken window to be fixed 😭

Mom and Pop were always far worse in my experience. Every repair request was multiple conversations and a personal insult to them vs corporate who had a handyman on hand and would at least send someone out to evaluate the issue.

My private landlord has fixed nothing in 3 years. I had to purchase a new fridge. While I’m grateful for my home and the price I pay for it - I am also given zero support to maintain it and am expected to bear the weight of anything wrong when I leave…. It’s exhausting

I do have a genuine question that might seem dumb. What about renters that don't want to buy? How would that change if rental properties didn't exist?

Anybody who commodifies housing is the problem. Does not matter if its a corporation or private.

I don’t think landlords are the problem here. Low wages and high costs are. Even if everyone who owned more than one home put them on the market tomorrow people would still not be able to afford to buy. Landlords provide a service that allows family’s who couldn’t afford to buy to be able to live in a house and not a cramped apartment if wages were higher those who want to buy could and those who don’t could still rent. There are genuinely people who recognize the burden of home ownership and don’t want to own.

Mom and pop landlords have provided some of the worst renting experiences in my life. Corporations have standardized maintenance and management practices that are at least predictable.

My mom and pop landlords love to pretend they relate to me, as if I’m not paying all their bills

My current landlord is pretty good, to be fair to them. I've lived here for like 7 years and rent has only gone up $100, which means my rent is like $400 cheaper than other rentals around me.
That said, I've never met my small "mom and pop" landlord because they live in Florida like 1300 miles away from me, and they own the other more expensive rentals around me too.

Everyone and their family buying up and "landlord" flipping properties are just as bad if not worse than the corporate ones.

my worst case was against a mom and pop landlord. the apartment was horrible and the landlord broke multiple laws in their management
With larger corps, they at least understand the laws and so when I cite them, they usually comply with minimal fuss

My dad and grandpa own and manage a few properties and while they take care of their rentals and don’t overprice them I don’t think they deserve to be seen as some kind of hero for that. Like taking care of your property and making it affordable is the BARE MINIMUM of owning property

I raise my tenant’s rent $50 when everyone else was raising their rents by hundreds & thousands. I only did that because my costs went up. Not everybody out there is predatory.

i lowk have a unicorn mom and pop landlords- they literally fix everything and anything so fast, never raise my rent, and make sure i'm happy with my unit. however i know this isn't the case for 98% of the industry 😭

I'm only becoming a homeowner because the people that have been my landlords for the last 8 years converted my rent to a rent to own and included my last 5 years towards the house price. I am very much in the minority though.
