My dad texted me when I told him I was doing this video and he said “The base I was on was taken back over by Taliban like a year after we left. Kurds for the most part embraced Americans. But I question what did we do successful while we were there. For us on the lower level, it wasn’t about politics. We just cared about the men/women to our left and right. Our unit members and the people of Iraq. All I know is we were trying to give Kirkuk a better living situation and I do know the Kurds weren’t fans of the Saddam regime. Iraq is hard to accept losing so many innocent lives for not much outcome on the back end. I do know they (the saddam regime) would sabotage the Kurdish oil lines and that wasn’t us doing it. Constant black smoke in the air. I do remember the kids in Kirkuk loved us and we would give them candy. After years past now, my heart says the lives lost and severely wounded just didn’t match the outcome of what politicians wanted. I don’t support what we lost in Iraq on the propaganda of weapons of mass destruction.” My father was deployed to Iraq as a firefighter and he now has been diagnosed with leukemia. For a long time, thousands of veterans believed the smoke, chemicals, burn pits, and other environmental hazards they were exposed to overseas had made them sick. Many spent years trying to convince the government that their illnesses weren’t just random bad luck. It took decades of research, testimony from veterans, and political pressure before the VA expanded recognition of toxic exposure related illnesses through laws like the PACT Act. (I have a whole video more in depth on this page dated 11-25-2025) here are some ADDITIONAL RESOURCES!! The Forever War by Dexter Filkins (reporting from Iraq and Afghanistan by a NY Times correspondent who covered both conflicts on the ground), Hubris: The Inside Story of Spin, Scandal, and the Selling of the Iraq War by Michael Isikoff & David Corn (how intelligence regarding Iraqi weapons programs was gathered, interpreted, and presented to the American public), The Assassins Gate by George Packer (account of the invasion and occupation while focusing on the political decisions and their consequences), The Gamble by Thomas E. Ricks (the Iraq War after 2006 including the troop surge and changing us strategy), Fiasco by Thomas E. Ricks (planning and execution of the Iraq War focusing on mistakes made during the occupation), CRS Reports on Iraq, Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002 (AUMF), U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence/report on Prewar Intelligence, Duelfer Report (Iraq Survey Group Final Report), & The Iraq Inquiry (Chilcot Report)… CHECK ALL THOSE OUT FOR MORE GOOD INFO!!! Love you guys.
