Yep… Fidelity froze my 401K and my HSA. Schwab has let me transfer money and trade stocks while here in the Philippines.

This is a well-thought-out video. I actually used to work at Fidelity for over a decade. I’m also a person who has moved from America to China so I know these challenges intimately. Mailing address ≠ legal residence.
If Fidelity asks your legal country of residence, you’re expected to answer truthfully. 401(k)’s are typically more liberal. My understanding is that Schwab has some internationally focused brokerage accounts that are a little more effective. Just make sure you are very careful with the language you use when they talk to you about it because it can trigger things without you intentionally doing it. Always talk directly about mailing address and NOT legal address. Know the difference before you call. also keep in mind. It does absolutely matter what country you are moving to. Not sure if that helps… But that is my experience with this.

Chase warned me before I moved to Spain. I maintained a US address but... all my spend was in Spain. After 4 years, I got the call. Now I'm with Citibank.

I have a 401k from my former employer still. I'm going to cash it out and take the penalty before I move. It's like 10k so nothing crazy. Just enough to help me get a few things done. looking at romania I think.

Yes, you are correct. MANY finance companies apply different rules once you have a foreign address.
