At this point, nurses have become everything—nurses, plumbers, technicians, cooks, administrators, and so much more. Behind the uniform, we’re human too. Every day, the Emergency Department sees an overwhelming number of patients, while many inpatient beds remain occupied for prolonged periods. We do our best to ensure every patient is cared for safely, whether they’re waiting in the ED, admitted to a ward, or being discharged home. No matter where a patient is, medications, treatments, and close observations must still be carried out. If these are missed, the responsibility falls on healthcare workers. We understand that waiting is frustrating. We know it’s exhausting, especially when you’re worried about your loved ones. But shouting at healthcare workers won’t make a bed appear, create more staff, or speed up the system. If you want change, direct your concerns to the people who can improve the healthcare system. Advocate for better healthcare funding, more nurses, more doctors, and more resources. Despite the shortages, we continue to show up every day, doing our best to care for every patient and save lives. All we ask for is a little patience, kindness, and understanding.

People are quick to say Singapore healthcare sucks, or that nurses are the problem. But before pointing fingers, take a moment to understand what really happens behind the scenes. Nurses don’t just give medications or take vital signs. We monitor patients around the clock, recognise when someone is deteriorating, respond to emergencies, comfort frightened patients, support anxious families, coordinate with doctors and allied health professionals, document everything accurately, and advocate for our patients every single day. We miss our meal breaks. We hold our bladders because someone else’s emergency can’t wait. We stay back after our shifts to ensure safe handovers. Healthcare isn’t just physically exhausting—it is mentally draining too. And when we finally sit down for a five-minute break? Someone calls. A patient needs help. A family member wants an update. Another admission arrives. So we get back up and keep going. Let’s also talk about the bed crunch in Singapore. Patients don’t wait for hours because nurses don’t care. Many times, there simply aren’t enough inpatient beds available. Wards are full, yet ambulances keep arriving, emergency departments continue filling up, and admissions never stop. While waiting for beds, patients still need medications, monitoring, investigations, reassurance, and care. We don’t create the bed crunch—we’re the ones trying our best to keep the system running despite it. Another thing people don’t realise is that nurses often become the point of contact for families. Yes, we update next of kin when doctors are unavailable. But we don’t just give information to anyone who asks. We follow protocol by updating the designated main spokesperson to protect the patient’s privacy and prevent breaches of confidentiality.

CGH improves a lot. I believe you and your dad will meet good and caring healthcare workers at CGH. When you do, please remember to post videos to praise them. Sharing positive experiences means a lot to the staff. Hope your Dad gets well soon!

I hope your father is doing better now. To help you better understand what it's like in the hospital, imagine you're working in a restaurant during peak dining hours, when everyone arrives at the same time. There are only a limited number of tables available, so every customer has to wait for one to become free. Now imagine that the peak-hour crowd never ends. It continues 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with a constant stream of people arriving while the number of tables never increases. That's the reality many hospitals face. Healthcare workers are doing their best to care for every patient, but with limited beds, resources, and staff, waiting is unavoidable despite everyone's best efforts.

While I understand that it is frustrating to wait, I don’t think it’s fair to vent your frustration on the healthcare workers. Taking the ambulance does not give you the priority. You will still be triaged based on the symptoms you are experiencing, be it you arrived by ambulance or you did a walk-in. Sometimes, bed crunch is something that is beyond our control, especially during the sick season. We are all trying our best here. Just because you don’t see us at our stations, that does not mean we’re not doing our jobs.

Bro you can always go private hospital if you are so impatient. It’s govt hospital what do you aspect. A whole lot of people go there. If you have no money or insurance to pay out the private cost, just wait. You think they like to put keep your father there meh? Extra work load for the A&E nurses to monitor on top of other patients they have to monitor.

I understand your frustration, bro. Based on your dad’s symptoms, the doctors need to rule out any heart problem first because that’s the priority. If everything looks okay, they may still observe or admit him for further tests. If there’s no bed available, he may have to wait until one is free. That’s quite common in Singapore public hospitals. If your dad is uncomfortable sitting, you can ask the staff if he can lie down while waiting. They’re keeping him for his safety because heart attacks can sometimes happen without obvious symptoms. Hope you dad in better condition bro.. 🥰

Bed crunch is real in Singapore. Doesn’t mean him being parked in the A&E, his not being attended by the medical team. Managing his symptoms are still being carried out by the nurses. X-rays and CT scans are still being done, despite patients being “parked” in A&E. Calling the Ambulance doesnt expedite his procedures, he will still be triaged by the medical team

While everyone is trying to explain about the waiting time, I would like to also point out on “just leave the hospital, tomorrow we can come back and the process will be faster” It will never be faster but will be the same. In fact the process will start all over again and that will lead to longer waiting time and delayed treatment. You’re not wrong to be concern however it will also go a long way if you can empathise the staff who are caring for your dad and other patients. No matter how much you question or shout at them, if there is bed crunch situation in the hospital, everybody will be stuck in A&E so let’s be nice to each other and understand the situation.

No need to be hospital staff to know govt hospitals are overwhelmed. Doctors/Nurses also need to eat, and their schedule packed like hell. No ward means no space, or space given to higher priority patients. Put in observation means your father under constant monitoring, already good enough for basic care when u use govt hospitals. If u can't wait, use private.

Just to give an analogy since you have F&B industry. It’s like being angry at the waiter because the chef cook slow. Idk what’s the relevance of raising the fact that nurses & doctors eating because what can the waiter do to make the chef cook faster unless they actually help to cook?

As you are not a healthcare professional, i understand its confusing & worrying. Look you have a fair point not being warded. But bare in mind being warded means that your dad has probably a more severe symptom. Those in the wards dont suka suka go in by chance one. Its all tailored to how severe how immediate care is needed. Its probably because your dad is quite stable thus why its longer than expected. & the ED dept are also equipped with whatever to manage your dad in the ED, thus the observation. so i understand abt the worry you have. & yes by all means ure entitled to bring him home if he agrees its within his & your rights but it also means that wtv the doctor wants to monitor for observation cant be monitored & it resets everything back to 0 its not a continuation of how long u’ve been waiting.

The answer is simple - you’re not the only patient in the A&E, but they might be the only doctor Oncall. Changing shifts will rotate people in charge and to be safe we ask the same questions just to make sure nothing has changed or your symptoms have not worsened. We ask question for treatment purposes, not to piss patients off.

Ward nurse here. Really emphasise with how your feeling but unfortunately the bed crunch in ward level is very bad all over singapore. We need to prioritise the most emergency case to the ward first. I’m not trying to say your dad is not having emergency but all A&E has observation unit also know as EDTU which is equipped to nurse and treat patient similar to how it’s done in ward setting. And once bed is available in the ward we will expedite transfer. Hope this clear things up and gws to your dad.

Welcome to SG healthcare system. Bed crunch is a thing. Doesn’t mean he comes in via ambulance he will be warded and prioritised. Also doesn’t mean he is being “parked” in A&E he is not being attended to. It is frustrating but that’s the sad reality. Hope he gets better soon.

as a nurse, sometimes long waits can be due to no bed discharges. especially in cgh there are alot of elderlys that are long stayers due to social issues or family issues or can even be waiting for nursing home etc which can takes up to months. but i do understand ur frustration but cgh rlly is overloaded , sometimes waiting for bed can be up to days and thats also one reason why a new hospital EGH is coming up in bedok. and if u rlly insist on bringimg back u can tell the nurse you wanna go back at own risk and then u have to sign a form but we seldom encourage that. but at the same time i wouldent understand the whole situation, could be also because the nurses or doctors didnt explain well enough or anyth

First things first, call ambulance don’t mean your father will have faster treatment (ps don’t call emergency ambulance unless its really an emergency) if your father is p2/p3 it will take even longer. Heck even peak hours paramedics have to queue to register their patients at CGH

I'm surprised people still don't know that healthcare is failing in Singapore? There are simply not enough beds available in the hospitals and even if there are beds there is not enough manpower. 😅

Hope all is well with ur dad... if u are still concerned this may be a big issue (his health) change hospital if possible. If in a&e elderly like this already this kind of service it isn't any better in the ward
