@henryfudgeofficial: The recipe for success is mostly survival bias and the luck-skill paradox, and the people selling it sincerely believe it, which is what makes it work. The honest version, including the wins that just fell into my lap. In short, you probably won’t be more successful if you cold plunge your dog every morning at 5am, or buy some weird supplements for your brain. Just be competent and roll the dice a few times. Watch the hands not the mouth with these podcasters, they sell you a simple story often to sell you what they define as necessary, namely listening to them. #successstories #meritocracy #psychologyofmoney #economics #hustle

Arnold Schwarzenegger nailed it when he said "I always correct people who say I am a self made man, because I'm not. I was helped by hundreds of people, over multiple decades. I simply had the right mix of luck and intelligence to use that help to my advantage".

You’re 100% right. It’s something I have come to acknowledge as fact that you can have all your ducks in a row, dot out all your “i”s and cross out all your “t”s but if luck is not on your side it’s all in vain. I think the conversation should be around how we can increase our luck and the probability of good fortunes (this is what others consider as the spiritual aspect to success).

So, are we still listening to the podcasters or are we all going to touch grass and realize it’s all just a mess of human biases and survivorship bias

in my experience a lot of success is pure luck. you can use intelligence and skill and Charisma and connections to line up the pieces but there's still always an element of luck

This is particularly true in the business/entrepreneur world, which is sad bc they often simultaneously regularly convince ppl that advanced education/degrees are pointless. Which for the avg person is the most statistically probable way for them o increase their income, wealth, and opportunities and isn’t nearly as deterministic by luck as the entrepreneur world is.

I totally agree but I’d also add that in a way you can create a bit of luck by getting in the right rooms, speaking to the right people and learning from the failures that those successful people mention when talking about their backstory ~~

For those interested in this subject, the book Fooled By Randomness by Nassim Taleb is a good read. Also, many of the concepts presented in this video are explored in the research on cognitive bias done by Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman. For an easier to jump in overview of their work, The Undoing Project by Michael Lewis is a great start.
