@allthefeelstherapy: One of the biggest mistakes I see after discovery is assuming the damage came from the affair alone. For many betrayed partners, it’s the lies that follow- the omissions, changing stories, and trickle truth- that keep the trauma alive. This doesn’t mean the person who had the affair is necessarily trying to be manipulative. Sometimes they’re acting out of shame, fear, or a desperate attempt to reduce the pain they’ve already caused. But understanding why someone keeps lying doesn’t change its impact. After betrayal, the brain is trying to answer one question: Is my reality safe to trust again? Every time the story changes, that question gets asked all over again. Repair isn’t built by revealing the truth one piece at a time. It’s built by creating a reality that stops changing. Understanding isn’t excusing.
