@thetravellingfrenchy: Rome’s 2,000-year-old fish fridge 🐟 🫧 Sitia in Crete hides one of its strangest ancient features right along the coast: Roman fish tanks carved into the rock. 🎣 Instead of storing fish on ice or transporting them immediately, the Romans engineered shallow seawater basins directly into the shoreline. Fresh fish were kept alive in these rock-cut pools until they were needed for trade or consumption, essentially an ancient version of a live seafood system! 🌊 Today, you can still see these carved stone enclosures along the coast. They look simple at first, but once you understand their purpose, they become surprisingly impressive: a coastal “live storage” system built nearly 2,000 years ago. Planning on visiting Crete soon?
