I’m Gen X and I didn’t turn out fine, I just survived it. Also, we had classes like Auto shop, Home Ec, Early Childhood Development, Wood Shop, Basic home maintenance, and drivers Ed. We learned the basics in class, along with budgeting our bank accounts/fill out a tax form, typing, computer class etc. Yes, the majority of us also had heavy responsibilities at home. Let start by bringing all the important classes back

I disagree. I had to figure things out significantly more than my son had to amd most of my Gen X friends would agree. I turned out better than fine and am a joyous, reasourceful woman filled with faith.

I don't disagree with Matt very often but he's way off on this one. We weren't parented like kids today are. We did have to learn a lot (not all) life skills in our own. I'm a law abiding person, never been arrested, raised two kids who are successful in their own careers, I own two successful businesses, saving for retirement and taking care of our elderly parents (oh the irony). So not only are most of us fine but we are thriving.

91 millennial here. most of my life has been "figure it the fuk out". I was raised by my grandparents. but now I have so many skills that I can pretty much do any job, might not be very good at it but definitely have the knowledge.

I’m gen X, I wasn’t taught many basic life skills. My parents sucked. I didn’t turn out fine. I’ve had to work on myself for over 30 years since I hit adulthood. I’m still not fine. But I’m better than I was. And in the future I’ll be better than I am now. Oh, and my kids? They DID learn those life skills, because I taught them, and they’re turning out much better than me. I’m breaking the cycle. We can do better, folks.

Gen X here. I was very “parented”. My friends were as well. But we did go outside to play til we were hungry, called inside or the street lights came on and we did drink from the hose. We also didn’t have social media recording our every thought, experience, and mistakes. Nothing wrong with any of that! I had a great childhood!

gen x was parented. they just gave us freedom but severe consequences if we messed up. we had to do chores, do homework or else no freedoms

I am Gen X. I was never taught any life skills. I was the youngest of five, and I think my parents were just exhausted. My life has not been easy. But you do learn from your mistakes. I think the best thing you can do for your kids is teach them how to cook, clean, and balance their budgets. You're setting them up for a more successful life. And all you want for your kids is a better life than you had.

I usually agree with him but I don’t on this. Life is who taught me. I’m not dysfunctional. Married 27 years happily with kids and grandkids. Had a great career. Heathy and smart. My parents? In debt to the day they died. Not healthy died of cancer. I did learn things from them but not nearly the things that I learned from hard life lessons of not being parented

I will say this. My parents were great. They did parent us however a lot of my friends of the same generation were not. My parents parented them. We always had a houseful.
