Those flowers are a representation of Asgore's love for Toriel, while they were meant to last a day, he kept them and took care of them. When their lives "end", it coincides with Asgore coming to terms with his past, especially with his wife, and the guilt he carried for years, so in the end, they still did the thing they wanted to do, just not in the form they wanted it to end.
