Rising to prominence in Khurasan in 747, he led the Black Standard armies to a succession of victories that transformed the Abbasid movement into the dominant power of the Islamic world. His campaigns crushed numerous rebellions, subdued resistance across the Iranian plateau, and defeated several eastern Iranian rulers and local powers that opposed Abbasid authority.
