@happysplaceseniordogs: 🐾 Face Jail = Freedom (Safely!) 🐾 We lovingly call it “face jail,” but it’s actually a lightweight mesh muzzle that helps prevent dogs from eating things they shouldn’t while out on walks or wandering the yard. Many dogs are natural scavengers. Rabbit poop, sticks, rocks, mulch, acorns, garbage… if it’s on the ground, some dogs think it’s a snack! While nutrient deficiencies can occasionally contribute to unusual eating habits, for many dogs it’s simply normal canine behaviour. 🐶 If your dog is constantly trying to eat non-food items, it’s always a good idea to chat with your veterinarian to rule out any underlying medical or nutritional concerns. 🩺 Once you’ve confirmed your pup is healthy, management tools can be lifesavers. A properly fitted mesh muzzle can help prevent expensive emergency vet visits and dangerous intestinal blockages while still allowing your dog to pant, drink, sniff, and enjoy their walk. Training is important too! If you’re dog can hear, teaching a solid “leave it” cue, practicing loose-leash walking, and rewarding your dog for checking in with you are all fantastic skills that can reduce scavenging over time.
