@katehenry.mi: Good customer service seems to no longer exist in 2026. We will never be using @airbnb again. Thank God for @hilton coming to the rescue. #airbnbhost #hiltonforthestay #storytime #portland #maine
Airbnb host here. You did NOTHING WRONG. She promised a cool environment, it wasn’t provided. She should have refunded you. Everyone on here disagreeing would feel different if it was their bank account.

Central AC should honestly be a requirement for Airbnbs

People in the comments clearly do not realize how hot 84-86 is inside. In that moment when you are overheating and have a baby, you’re going to find alternate lodging and try for a refund the next day. You are not wrong at all

And this is exactly why Air B&Bs are failing and hotels are becoming the choice once again.

You should have called the host immediately that evening to see if they could fix the issue. That’s why you forfeited your money.

i hear the point about giving the host the chance to fix it but i really feel like we’re not focusing enough on how they’re kinda false advertising. two portable window units is not the same as central ac and framing it like the airbnb has ac when it doesn’t really feels slimy to me. i feel like they should have specified that difference in the description before you booked.

I don’t understand people saying you’re over-reacting. 86 degrees in the place where you need to sleep is INSANE, especially with a baby. I wouldn’t be able to stay there either, and I don’t even have a baby.

I’m over so airbnb. We went to Newport Rhode Island a week ago over $1000 dollars for 4 nights. We were there not even 5 hours and we had to leave bc my FIL unexpectedly passed away. No refund. Partial or anything. Not to mention our check in was at 3 o’clock and the cleaning people were still there until 3:40

it's because you didn't give them time to fix it in good faith. air conditioners go out all of the time in heat waves. if you reached out that it wasn't working and she didn't fix it in a timely manner then you would get a refund. otherwise we have several personal ac units. she could have possibly brought another working one right over. you didn't give her a chance. next time always reach out to the owner to fix first.

I cannot figure out why anyone uses Airbnb anymore. they are not that much cheaper than a hotel at this point, and hotels clean up after you.

I don’t understand why the comments are so negative. You booked an apartment that said there was AC and there wasn’t. A portable cooler is not going to keep up with a heat wave. My AC went out last month and we immediately packed our kids up and stayed somewhere else until it was fixed. Safe sleep regulations aside, nobody is getting quality rest when it is 86 degrees inside.

400 a night and stains on the duvet?! Absolutely not. Outside of the AC unit issues being unacceptable- that’s crazy

As someone who has managed Airbnbs you were supposed to message the host first and go from there. Lots of times Airbnb support would side with the guest if the host wasn’t able to provide a solution but you jumping to Airbnb support didn’t help your case.

if you paid by credit card, try disputing the charge through them. The service you purchased was not provided

You didn’t give her a chance to fix it you should have reached out to her before just moving and expecting a refund

unfortunately I don't think you are gonna win this one bc the host wasn't given a chance to rectify it, I understand that it was hot and your baby was uncomfortable but the host has to be given a chance to make you more comfortable

I’ve had this exact scenario happen. But I let the host know their AC was broken first. They went and brought in a whole HVAC team in and installed a new portable AC system when their central AC system went out. How is the host suppose to fix it when they have no idea what is going on, even if late at night? HVAC companies are open 24/7 and it takes 1 hr to get an apartment cool and dehumidified.

Mom of a six month old here. I totally agree that air conditioning is necessary when traveling with young children. However, I don’t understand why you didn’t contact the host once you arrived at the hotel. Given the conditions, it was a priority to get your daughter somewhere safe to sleep for the night, but I can’t understand why the first time you contacted the host was to request a refund after going straight to AirBnB wasn’t successful. The host cannot fix problems they are unaware of. AirBnB and many host are problematic, but we as consumers need to give them opportunities to rectify these problems before demanding refunds.
