@gabriel.nussbaum: Student loans are OFFICIALLY broken 😡 That’s according to the Treasury Select Committee - an influential group of MPs - who published their inquiry into student loans today. They said that student loans were mis-sold in three ways and that successive retrospective changes to the repayment terms have not been fair. Dame Meg Hillier, the Chair of the Committee, said that the Government has a ‘moral obligation’ to reverse the upcoming threshold freeze. Is it time for change? #studentloans #graduate #PersonalFinance

I personally don't think the threshold is the most egregious part. it's the interest. how can I have been paying my loan this long and now have £12,000 more debt? I don't mind paying it. but I should expect my balance to go down when I do.

It’s not just the threshold - it’s the APR rate that people have suffered with for more than a decade. For many the damage has been done and an increase in the threshold (whilst welcomed) will have no practical effect because their debt is already in the 6 figures.

They need to change the interest/remove it, higher threshold and backdate it

When I finished my postgraduate loan I owed roughly £40,000 but now I owe £46,000 and that is paying £500 back for the undergrad and post grad monthly!! £500 is half a mortgage for some people 😭

it's the interest that's the big disgrace!! I borrowed approx £45,000 in total. £5k interest was added whilst I was still studying & now, less than 10 years later, I owe 67,000 on my plan 2 paying off a student loan is not achievable. it just becomes a career-long graduate tax until it gets wiped

It's the interest rate that's the issue. Psychologically it's grim seeing the debt go up and up. It's not fair that the government is making a profit on education loans, it should be fixed at inflation like the Plan 5 loans

They need to fix the oversea repayments. It’s insane, you can be below minimum wage in another country, but the threshold is MUCH lower than the UK, and they want you to pay it back USING A UK BANK ACCOUNT… meaning you then have lose even more money due to conversion rates.

Sick of plan 2 being spoken about differently than plan 1. My interest is over 6% and won’t get capped, I was told it was essentially interest free and I’ve paid it off almost twice over and still have another 5+ years to go

If it was any other loan company they wouldn’t be allowed to do what they’ve done, how have they got away with this for so long

Interest rate is more important than threshold. Increasing threshold just adds more to the interest and overall balance so if you do pay it off, end up paying more

Freezing the threshold year on year for student loans, while not even thinking about maybe starting to adjust the pension triple lock 🙄 tell us the gov doesn’t care about young people

Surely it’s the interest that is the issue not the repayment threshold, just putting it off and never getting rid of it.. useless ask imo
