My childhood ran alongside religion, a fractured family, and a crown that kept sliding from one branch of us to another. My father lost his throne. My sister and her husband took it. I stood to one side while ministers and bishops and armies argued over what the kingdom would become. They died without children, and the succession came down to me. By then my own life had already gone wrong in the worst way. I was pregnant again and again, and lost child after child. One son lived longer than the rest and was held up as the hope of the whole line, and then he died too, while still a boy. Not long after, Parliament stopped waiting on me and handed the future to another family altogether. When the crown did finally reach me, I ruled through a long war, through parties that hated each other, and through friends who turned on me. The favourites I trusted fell out of favour, and new ones climbed up in their place. Men fought around me for power the whole time, and I carried it with no child left to leave it to. In my reign England and Scotland became a single kingdom. It was bitterly fought over, resented on both sides, and pushed through anyway. By the end I was sick and worn out, and most of the people I had started with were gone. The throne I had spent my life protecting passed to a distant relative from Hanover. My own line stopped with me. I had been a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a queen.
