Retired EE here. All 3 of your examples have myriad examples in the public domain. PCB programs do auto-routing. Easy. Home automation with ESP32 projects including phone app's are abundant on the inter-webs! An audio amp is, as u indicated, analog, and imho too simple. I quit judging Science Fair projects because 95% were copied from websites where all the math, charts, verbiage, etc was done. So what do I think is valuable to a company today? Demonstrate your understanding of how to use AI on day 1 to solve a problem (not how to create the AI). Compare and contrast it with how the same problem would have to be solved without it and how your skills with AI that I know u have, will help u make an immediate impact on productivity. It's not about expieriences and responsibilities, it's about results! Just my thoughts as an old tech-weenie who was a hiring manager of EE's and techs for 23 yrs at a Fortune 500 high tech company. Good luck to all of u!

hey i built an audio Amplifier using 2sc5200 transistor and 1000uf capacitor and a 1k ohm resistor does that count as a project to be included in my portfolio?

Built an amplifier from scratch. Only bought the speaker. 3d printed the spacer for the speaker and the plate for the gain knob and the plug in for a guitar. Built the box out of wood and glued the material to the wood. Built all the internals from scratch and made everything on a pcb. Also attached an oscilloscope display on the top of the box to show the audio waveforms. I plan to add Bluetooth capabilities and a digital display to show what songs are playing and stuff like that.

I actually did all 3 and I got hired without any internship. He’s not lying.

What do you recommend as a personal project for a high school student who wants to major in EE ? They have taken engineering at high school and and can do cad and solidworks (not sure if that is something you use as an EE)

Not sure there’s a program where these projects aren’t built-in to the curriculum. My University had 5 project labs.. projects where you got the assignment/project at the start of the semester and you had to be done by the end. But these projects were much more involved than your smaller projects.

the most impressive project you can show them is one you are passionate about. They love seeing passion behind things you do, not just doing what everyone else is doing.

mate, 16 years as an engineer and huring manager for 9, thise projects have zero connection to reality, i would prefee someone with a simulation project but for a real project, solar plant, Substation or wind energy...etc.
