It's a microscopic parasite, not a bacteria or virus, and it spreads through food or water contaminated with human feces, most often linked to raw produce like berries, basil, cilantro, and parsley. Right now the CDC is tracking a multistate outbreak: at least 20 hospitalized since May 1st, and North Carolina alone has reported 110+ cases. The CDC actually calls this "Cyclospora season," May through August, every single year. The tricky part: symptoms can take up to 2 weeks to show up, so most people have no idea what caused it. That's why it's often misdiagnosed or missed completely. If your diarrhea won't quit, don't just ride it out. Ask your doctor specifically for a Cyclospora stool test. Treatment is a simple course of antibiotics once it's actually caught. Wash your produce.
