I work for a small town PD. I would. LOVE. for this to be the way we could run things. But we can’t. Having people cover shifts is mission critical and people’s lives depend on us being on. But that is the job and I knew it when I took it. When I retire I will be so happy to take a retirement job where I get to say, “Todaloo!” 🙂 I strongly support workers being able to have work-life-balance if possible.

So. Much. This!!!!! If my hourly, non exempt schedule is 8-4, I expect to leave at 4pm. End of discussion. If the position requires other hours, especially inconsistently, the employer needs to have a paid on call policy that’s fully disclosed prior to hiring for said position.

If I’m rescheduling my personal time, I’m getting paid OT. Or I’m not rescheduling. I already do evening work that is scheduled & I take time off for the following morning, but that was a mutually agreed to set of tasks and I got to pick the night/time that fit my schedule best.
