@lucaonthego: One of the best meals you'll have in Tokyo probably won't be in a kombini. 🇯🇵 It might be in the basement of a department store. They're called depachika, and I genuinely think they're one of the most underrated food experiences in Japan. Imagine walking into a food hall where dozens of specialists are preparing incredible dishes right in front of you. Instead of committing to one restaurant, you can build your own meal from whatever catches your eye: 🍣 fresh sushi & sashimi 🥩 wagyu beef 🍤 tempura 🍢 yakitori 🍱 beautiful bento boxes 🍰 pastries and desserts 🍓 seasonal sweets 🥟 regional specialties from all over Japan It's perfect if you're traveling with friends or family because everyone can choose something different, then sit down and enjoy it together. 📍Some of my favorite depachika are: • Isetan Shinjuku: one of the most famous, with an incredible variety of high-quality food. • Takashimaya Shinjuku: another fantastic option with everything from traditional Japanese dishes to international food. • Matsuya Ginza and Mitsukoshi Ginza: beautifully presented food and premium ingredients. • Tokyo Station: ideal if you're about to catch a Shinkansen and want something much better than convenience store food. • Nihonbashi: home to historic department stores with excellent food halls that many tourists overlook. 💡 My favorite tip? Go 1–2 hours before closing. Many stalls begin discounting freshly prepared meals, sushi, and bento boxes, meaning you can enjoy incredibly high-quality food for a fraction of the original price. It's one of the easiest ways to eat well in Tokyo without spending a fortune. Sometimes the best food in Japan isn't hidden down an alley... It's hidden one floor underground.
