@pirate1.0: Project 941 "Akula" (NATO: Typhoon-class) was a Soviet Cold War submarine program that produced the largest submarines ever built—a massive 48,000-ton submerged displacement, 175-meter long, 23-meter wide behemoth. Developed by the Rubin Design Bureau as a direct response to the U.S. Ohio-class, it was designed to guarantee a retaliatory strike by carrying up to 20 R-39 "Sturgeon" ballistic missiles, each armed with 10 nuclear warheads, and capable of withstanding a first strike while hiding under the Arctic ice. Powered by two OK-650 pressurized water reactors delivering 190 megawatts and driving two 50,000-horsepower steam turbines, the Typhoon could reach a submerged speed of 27 knots. Six of these 48,000-ton titans were originally planned, but only six were completed, and today only one, the Dmitri Donskoi, remains in active service, primarily as a testbed for Russia's new Bulava missile system. Its 170-day endurance and ability to surface by breaking through 2.5-meter ice made it a premier weapon of the Cold War, a symbol of Soviet naval might that, for all its size and power, was ultimately too expensive to sustain in the post-Soviet era. #project941akula #nuclearsubmarine #sovietunion
