When the Founder’s Council attacked, she let the townspeople think she burned in the church with 26 other vampires, but she’d actually compelled her own way out and left everyone else to die. She returns in season 1 posing as Elena, immediately blowing up Stefan and Elena’s relationship and proving she can outmaneuver Damon without trying. Katherine’s whole philosophy is “survive at all costs.” She feels no loyalty except to herself, lies like breathing, and will sacrifice anyone to save her own skin. Yet underneath all the manipulation, she’s driven by fear and loneliness. She spent five centuries running from Klaus, never able to trust or love without an ulterior motive. The few times she shows real emotion are with her daughter Nadia, whom she spent centuries searching for, and in rare moments of vulnerability with Stefan. She eventually gets the cure forced on her in season 4, becomes human again, starts aging rapidly, and possesses Elena’s body in season 5 to cheat death one last time. Even in death she causes chaos, becoming the Queen of Hell in season 8 and trying to drag Mystic Falls down with her. Katherine’s brutal, selfish, and hilarious, and she’s the reason the Petrova doppelgänger line exists.
