I don’t understand the “what would we do to fill our time” thing. Literally anything. It gives the same energy as “I can’t retire, I’d be bored.” Get a personality outside of your job. There are 1000s of options 😅

that’s insane i can’t imagine the amount of money i’d spend on my hobbies if i had enough time to do them. now i just buy supplies and let them collect dust, never buying replacements bc i never run out

I complained on reddit that I was tired of working 60 hours a week and somebody told me I still have 120 hours in my week to pick up an extra job. Lol.

You forget another point of the 40 hour workweek. It can make you so tired of working that you cannot engage in politics, to organize for better work conditions. It also makes you too tired to read and educate yourself on what is going on around you. 40 hour work combined with increased workload and the stress it gives gets a docile population. Not with everyone, but with enough people to keep the current state of things

it's not even a 40 hour work week because you have to drive there and back and take a minimum of 60 minutes of breaks throughout the day meaning you are required to dedicate an additional 5-10 hours of time a week to your job on top of the base 40

I left a higher paying, high stress and long hours job and it decreased my budget significantly because I no longer felt like I had to buy my happiness with my limited free time.

The most frustrating thing is when people act like work is inherently important to our lives - for most of human history we did not have a 40 hour work week - we worked when we needed to eg tending the land, looking after animals etc

Anthropologists believe we used to work only 15 hours a week to collect all necessary resources to survive in the actual wild - and we’ve traded that in for.. this. Also, I think the only way we’d be scared of leisure time is bec we’ve been indoctrinated into upholding capitalism. We’re convinced our productivity correlates to our worth and purpose. We don’t know ourselves outside serving another’s interest and direction; we haven’t had sufficient opportunity to practice serving our own. On top of the ingrained fear that we can’t survive if we don’t work hard enough nor do we deserve that much support from others. It’s all bc the rich and powerful convinced us to sell our freedom to feed their greed.

If I had more time and more money I’d 100% be spending that time and money doing things, buying things, supporting local restaurants. But instead I stay home and eat a scoop of peanut butter for breakfast to save money lol

Just raise wages to pay what you’d pay for 40hrs to 20hrs. People will spend more with more leisure time. It would quite literally stimulate the economy while also maintaining a healthy labor force.
