@bre.deshon: I have plenty of pictures from my teenage years that look exactly like the one going around of Nolan on the boat. I know people are going to say that I'm projecting with this take, but I really do think that people need to understand that the victim blaming happening is a different form of the respectability politics we all hate.

And sometimes as teens, we don't believe what our parents will say about our friends

This is just blaming the victim. Does it matter if his parents did or didn’t have the talk with him? He has a right to exist! Period.

As a girl who was often “the only one” growing up I feel what you’re saying. I don’t recall anyone ever having “the talk” with me, but I understood the root by just listening to conversations amongst my elders. My mom let me go hang out, but please believe she was picking me up 9:30pm on the dot…and no i couldn’t go hiking or on vacations or go anywhere that would take more then 15 minutes to get to me.

I’m way older than you. My parents told me in the 1970s and 80s, “when push comes to shove, they are not your friends.” Those exact words. I learned about this eventually. Still dealing with the trauma

That's good your parents gave you the talk. My parents wanted to be so included, they didn't, I had to figure it out.

I agree with most of what you said, I'm gonna devil's advocate on a small point because I was raised by my black father in Alaska in small white, conservative towns. He would say these people are not your friends, but it was said a in blanket generality that nobody was your friend, everybody will backstsb you. What he didn't specify was the people that you think really are your friends who are white, you have to watch out for the ones that make little racist jokes, then say you're not like the others, or I didn't mean you, always making little side quips because when the drinks get flowing and when you do one thing that pisses the main ones off, like trying to date one of the white popular boys, that implicit bias or flat out racism will show its head. That's what they did not prepare me for was the people that I actually trusted who were white had implicit bias and how to recognize it with the micro macro aggressions. Those are the people you cannot send your black children out with. My black father did not specify the red flags.

As a white lady I am so sorry this is your reality. I have always tired to treat everyone equally. I hope I did so. I have a mixed nephew and I would be devastated if he was ever treated unfairly! He is so important to me!

I thank you for this content. It really broadens my horizons. We lived in Africa for many years amd we were the minority and we still had white privilege! I have to be aware of this reality more than I am.

It’s as if we forget what we were like as teenagers and kids…many of us had friends that we thought cared about us…and we were wrong! Peer pressure is huge at that age too!

My father actually NEVER had the talk with me. They did talk with my siblings but not me. I am the oldest and was very much UNAWARE. I also tend to navigate towards the black girls though so maybe they thought I was aware.
