@cs_faith: What caused the fall of Valyria? The exact cause of the Doom of Valyria is one of the greatest mysteries in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones. Neither George R. R. Martin nor the in-universe histories give a definitive explanation. What is known is that about 400 years before the events of the novels, the Valyrian peninsula was devastated in a single day: Fourteen volcanoes known as the Fourteen Flames erupted simultaneously. Massive earthquakes shattered the land. Entire cities were destroyed. Most of the dragonlords, dragons, and the Valyrian Freehold's population were killed. The region became the haunted Smoking Sea, filled with ruins and dangerous magic. Several theories exist: Natural catastrophe (most likely in-universe): A chain reaction of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes destroyed the peninsula. Magical disaster: Many fans believe the Freehold relied on blood magic to control the Fourteen Flames. If those spells failed—or if the mages maintaining them died—the volcanoes could have erupted catastrophically. Sabotage or conspiracy: Some theories suggest enemies, such as the mysterious Faceless Men, may have assassinated key Valyrian sorcerers, triggering the magical collapse. There is no confirmation of this. Divine punishment: In-world religions claim the gods destroyed Valyria because of its arrogance, slavery, and widespread use of blood magic. This is presented as belief rather than fact. One family survived because they had already left: House Targaryen had relocated to Dragonstone about twelve years earlier after Daenys Targaryen foresaw the Doom in a prophetic dream. That foresight allowed the Targaryens to become the last surviving dragonlord family, eventually conquering Westeros.
