Brandon Tatum 🇺🇸 really sat his Black behind in front of a camera and decided that Michelle Obama, the first Black First Lady of the United States, needed his assessment of whether she was “fine” enough for his approval. Then, as if the misogynoir wasn’t already loud enough, he dragged out that tired, disgusting conspiracy questioning whether Michelle Obama is even a woman, before boasting that his white wife is supposedly more attractive. Man, have several seats. Michelle Obama is a naturally beautiful Black woman who has carried herself with intelligence, dignity, elegance and class on the world stage for decades. She is a Princeton graduate, Harvard-trained attorney, former First Lady, bestselling author and one of the most admired women in America. And the irony here is breathtaking. You’re using your wife as some kind of beauty standard to demean a Black woman while your own wife has publicly disclosed undergoing cosmetic surgery to alter and enhance her appearance. You don’t get to boast about a cosmetically enhanced standard of beauty while ridiculing the natural features of a Black woman, and then expect nobody to notice the hypocrisy. And let’s call the larger issue what it is: Black women have endured generations of being told their noses are too broad, their lips too full, their bodies too muscular, their hair too coarse, their skin too dark and their femininity somehow suspect. So when a Black man joins that chorus, mocking Michelle Obama’s appearance, questioning her womanhood and holding up whiteness as the prettier alternative, that is not some harmless discussion about “preferences.” That is misogynoir with a microphone. Michelle Obama does not need Brandon Tatum to think she is fine. History already knows who she is. The sadder question is why a Black man feels the need to diminish a beautiful, accomplished Black woman in order to elevate his wife. You could have celebrated your wife without disrespecting Michelle Obama. But apparently praising whiteness wasn’t enough. You had to put Black womanhood down to do it. #Michelleobama
