The referee allows play to continue when an offence occurs and the opposing team will benefit from the advantage, penalising the offence instead if the anticipated advantage doesn't develop within a few seconds (The FA) . Key phrase: "opposing team" — meaning the team the foul was committed against. Advantage only exists to benefit the fouled team. Law 12 – Fouls and Misconduct, "Disciplinary action" This covers what happens to the offender when advantage is played. For a serious/DOGSO-level foul: if the referee plays advantage following a DOGSO offence and the attacking team scores, the goal is awarded and the offending player is not cautioned or sent off (IFAB) — but that only applies when it's the fouled team scoring on the advantage.
