I think the biggest misconception is salary vs time. I left a silver circle firm taking a 25% pay cut for time with my family. I'm not longer working 12 hours days; never mind the 15-18 hour days in magic circle firms. Yes we are well paid; but we trained for a long time.. the big bucks in big firms - you have no life Monday to Friday, sometimes even at weekends and some people don't realise that

I made a video talking about my legal aid salary a while and talked about why it’s low. My god, people were out for my blood telling me that average lawyers earn much more. You can’t use London firms salary as the guideline for everything. That is setting up unrealistic expectations. And I don’t even do private work so there’s no comparison to be made.

I work in a civil service role and this matches what I am earning, such a misconception that we all earn highly!

This is purely because you don’t work in London. Minimum for an NQ in London is around £80k at a mid tier firm. If working at a top 50 it will be around £100k plus

Saw in interesting discussion once about how law is a pretty crap route to becoming wealthy — in many other high paying routes as your seniority increases the amount of round the clock work you have to do decreases - an MD will log off for the evening, a business owner can let their business largely run itself with some oversight - but the grind in law genuinely never stops until you retire. Partners are only as good as their last few years of business for the firm in terms of remuneration, they never get to take their foot off the gas. Not going to be a universal experience but I do think it’s broadly accurate to what I have seen.
