A 62-year-old New York architect who murdered at least eight women in 17 years was sentenced today to life in prison without parole. Rex Heuermann is to serve three consecutive terms of life without the possibility of parole for three counts of first-degree murder and four consecutive terms of 25 years to life for four counts of second-degree murder. Judge Timothy Mazzei sentenced Heuermann this morning (Wednesday, June 17) in Suffolk County Supreme Court in Riverhead on Long Island. Heuermann pleaded guilty on April 8 to killing seven women and admitted in his allocution to murdering an eighth victim, Vergata, though he was not formally charged in her death under the plea deal. Judge Mazzei said “stand up” as Heuermann began to speak today. “There are no words I can say. I'm responsible for what was said in this room today. The words I would say have no meaning, and I'm going to leave it there at this time,” he said. Mazzei referenced comments from the prosecutor “that you're sorry that you got caught.” “I assume that you're sorry for what you've done to your wife and children. Are you a little bit sorry for what you did to these poor innocent women? Eight women that you strangled to death, at least eight that we know of? Are you at least a little bit sorry for that? Yes?” Mazzei said. “Yes, I am,” Heuermann said. “You know, you've been described as a very big man, but you're a disgusting and despicable small man, if you're a man at all. And you're a coward,” Judge Mazzei said. “Get him out of here!” Mazzei said after reading Heuermann’s sentence. Heuermann founded an architecture firm in Manhattan and lived on Long Island. He was arrested outside his office July 13, 2023, after DNA from a discarded pizza crust linked him to the crimes. Heuermann’s victims were: Maureen Brainard-Barnes: Disappeared in July 2007; her remains were found in December 2010 near Gilgo Beach. Melissa Barthelemy: Disappeared in July 2009; her remains were found in December 2010. Megan Waterman: Disappeared in 2010; her remains were found in December 2010. Amber Lynn Costello: Disappeared in 2010; her remains were found in December 2010. Valerie Mack: Disappeared in 2000; her remains were found in April 2011. Jessica Taylor: Disappeared in 2003; her remains were found in July 2003 and March 2011. Sandra Costilla: Her remains were discovered in North Sea, Long Island, in 1993. Karen Vergata: Disappeared in 1996; her remains were found on Fire Island and west of Gilgo Beach #law #court #crime
