@zoya_letstalkwoc: Many of our favourite “Gen Z” terms are actually terms from African American Vernacular English or AAVE. AAVE was created admist harsh conditions of oppression against the Black community in the US, creating English based creole languages. But when framed as mere internet slang terms, we become disconnected from its roots in resilience, and struggle. This is similar to Karl Marx’s concept of commodity fetishim in which consumers are hidden from the social relations that create commodities today. When Black culture is erased as a creator of Gen Z slang, it’s easier to steal and commodify it for profit and attention. And ironically then, Black people still are scrutinized for speaking it although they are the creators, but everyone else is seen as “trendy”. AAVE was never a “trend” and although many of the terms are deeply embedded into our vernacular today, take the time to still recognize its origins. I got so confused when I saw Marx because I never expected someone to talk about AAVE with Marx being included. Everything I'm so interested in or want to be educated on goes back to Karl Marx, and I'm here for it. This was also very eye-opening info I didn't know, especially since I used AAVE all the time when they get trendy, like ate, period, slay, Etc. And it makes me rethink what I'm going to say next.

Heyy loved tha videoo, very basedd, one question tho like I definitely get why black ppl in US have a problem with white people trying to talk like them, or how brands are using AAVE to sell stuff online, but I wonder how this logic applies to ppl that are not from the US , cause today in most places of the world american culture, media and language is shoved down everyones throats and that includes AAVE since black american culture just like the white one is also exported and pushed into everyones throats through a series of imperialist mechanisms (capital export, violence, coercion, etc..) So like when speaking in english be it irl or internet people outside from US have this option to speak the standard imperialist "white people english" or to speak the english of the people of US who also have to struggle with the consequences imperialism, colonialism and US captalism, so what is wrong about mixing them up? like what's the point of policing white non "American" ppl on the internet when they say things like Slay, period, tea, etc..? like they are not even slurs its just a way cooler form of speaking english (not trying to start an fight here like this is a legit question )

I catch myself useing AAVE alot because i grew up in a mainly black area/school i will definitely be more careful with my wording and i hope its okay for me to use it but not classifie it as internet slang
