I like this approach. How what is going on now can be related, compared, or contrast to certain historical events. Also I think they would be more engaged.

I teach writing strategies through theories: African-American Criticism, Psychoanalytic, theory, Feminism, and Marxism, and juxtapose it with current events… it’s called advanced composition. My classes are always full although they enjoy the theory the goal is teaching them writing strategies in the face of AI.

I think you will have far more engagement and interest. Typically that’s how school works on the grad level which makes it so much more interesting. Can’t wait to see how this works. I’ve always said for more kinetic learning it has to be relevant.

As an educator, I believe students would benefit more from this approach because it provides greater clarity and a more complete understanding of the subject. Too often, important parts of history are overlooked or not fully accounted for, making it harder for students to understand the full context and significance of historical events.

This is a dope method. Basically teaching “how did we get here.” 🔥🔥🔥 making connections will definitely help with info retention

That sounds fascinating. When I went through school, history was memorizing dates, events, people and locations. We had nothing about why it matter or how to learn from it or compare it to recent events. Luckily my parents filled in a lot of that for me, but I would have loved history if we had taken a more comprehensive learning journey. Good luck!

I teach my English compositions classes like this, and it works really well but I am realizing I need to be really explicit with how the inquiry-based lessons transfer to broader skills. They’ve started thinking I’m just going on deep dives for funsies and missing the entire point.

As a retired teacher (43 y hs math), I love LOVE your rethinking & redesigning your teaching strategy. I clearly remember that shift for me & how exciting it was for ME, but then for my students. Most outside of the academic environment don’t understand how educators are ALWAYS thinking, reflecting, redesigning, “RE” everything. Your enthusiasm is coming through the screen lol! LOVE IT!

I love this. You may enjoy including some Museum Studies techniques in your class. Maybe even partner with a local museum to help you and students create a final project.

As a retired educator, students are more likely to be engaged when there's RELEVANCE! This approach sounds amazing and I hope you come back mid-semester and let us know how it's going!! I promise you, they will come back and ask you questions for more clarity, which will be your confirmation they are learning!!!

I love how on a previous video you mentioned that if anyone’s teaching style hasn’t changed over 5-10 years, that’s problematic and the next video I see is you doing just that! Def taking notes 🎯

Love this! Do you happen to listen to Throughline? Great podcast, does this kind of thematic, historic investigation of current events. There might be some overlap there that would be interesting to your students.

What themes or trends are you using? What sort of structure are you thinking? I'm redesigning my IB History class because of a change in their program and this is similar to my thinking... 🤔
