This is the reality of raising a child with level three autism. I stepped outside to let the dog out before my mom came over. I was gone for a few minutes. When I came back inside, Noah had snapped his laptop in half. People often ask why I don’t punish him for this. The answer is complicated. Noah has Level 3 autism. His brain doesn’t process cause and effect, consequences, or discipline the way most people’s brains do. A severe punishment wouldn’t teach him the lesson people assume it would. He simply doesn’t have the cognitive ability to understand it in the same way. That doesn’t mean there aren’t consequences. It means I have to parent differently. Every decision has to meet him where he is, not where I wish he could be. Moments like this are hard. They’re expensive. They’re emotionally draining. There are days I want to cry, days I have to walk away for a minute, and days I have to remind myself that he’s not giving me a hard time, he’s having a hard time. Then I take a deep breath, clean up the mess, and start again. Every single day. This is a side of autism that doesn’t always make it to social media, but it’s part of our life too. ❤️
