I work in a pub and every time I take a food order and someone says “no onions” or “gluten free bun” or ANY kind of removal or ingredients, I always ALWAYSSSS ask if it’s an allergy or a preference. If it’s a preference, all good. If it’s an allergy, I go to the kitchen, I check that EVERY THING on their plate is free from that item. I make sure the fryer is different. I double and triple check because we DO NOT fuck around with allergies.

I can tell you at every restaurant I worked in they took allergies extremely seriously we had to ask every table we had to let the chef know and a manager would have to bring out the allergy plates

My favourite was the time that I got glutened from a gluten free burger and when I rang up the next day to tell them they said “oh yea we can swap out the bun for a Gf one but the burger Pattie isn’t gluten free….” I reported them to the ministry of primary industries 😅🤦♀️

My favorite gluten free place so far is in Rochester, MN and when I have to go to Mayo Clinic I always eat there. They split the restaurant in 2 and have 2 separate kitchens, one for regular and one for gluten free so there is never cross contamination. It helps that the owners are celiac.

I work at a restaurant and it’s not something we can ever guarantee 100% so I always make sure to warn them about the items that are likelier to have cross contamination. Just don’t fuck with people’s healths. As silly or annoying as an accommodation might feel, you’re messing with their life by not respecting it to the best of you abilities.
