![THE BRAND OLD DAY — RECOVERED REEL 117 [ SPIDER-MAN — MEDIEVAL DARK FANTASY PILOT 1985 ] The spider was not a costume. It was a coat of arms nobody would claim. In 1985, a production unit registered in Prague under the name Aranea Film — no prior credits, financed by a private heraldic society whose members appear in no public record — completed 33 minutes of 16mm footage across nine nights in a fortified monastery complex in southern Bohemia closed to the public since 1961. The production had no permit to enter. The access agreement was verbal, made with a caretaker who, when the crew tried to confirm arrangements the following week, had no employment record at the site or anywhere in the diocese. The Spider-Man pilot relocated the story to a walled city in an unspecified century — a masked figure moving across rooftops of slate and timber, hunted by men who did not know what they were hunting. No dialogue for the first sixteen minutes. The costume department’s notes record that the mask and mantle were not built to order. They arrived pre-aged, delivered two days before principal photography by a courier with no markings on the cart. The wardrobe supervisor’s log: “the weave is not machine work. I have shown it to three people. None of us can name the technique.” It aired once on a regional channel in Bohemia, October 31st 1985. Runtime: 33 minutes. The station log carries no title and no production credit. A viewer wrote in describing the closing shot — the masked figure kneeling in a cathedral nave, removing the mask, and the frame cutting to black on the face of a man the letter’s author insisted she had seen depicted in a fresco somewhere, centuries old, though she could not say where. Aranea Film dissolved in January 1986. The monastery complex was surveyed in 1991.
