Officials say the concern extends beyond the bacterium itself, as closed-loop cooling systems may also contain chemicals that municipal treatment plants are not designed to process. Meta says its contractor stopped discharging wastewater, began hauling it off-site, and that independent testing later found no remaining contamination.
