This is the Surinam toad (Pipa pipa), one of the most extraordinary amphibians on Earth. After mating, the eggs become embedded in the skin on the female’s back. Her skin gradually grows around each egg, forming individual chambers where the embryos develop safely. Instead of releasing free-swimming tadpoles, the young complete their development inside these chambers. Weeks later, fully formed baby toads emerge from their mother’s back, ready to live on their own. It may look unbelievable, but it’s one of nature’s most remarkable reproductive adaptations.
