I had to pay $1,800 a month in alimony and $800 a month in child support in Florida. My attorney even told me he was sorry because he and several other attorneys he knew who had gone through divorce ended up in similar situations. If you get married in Florida, I would strongly suggest understanding the financial consequences before ever getting divorced there. In my experience, the system felt heavily tilted against the higher-earning spouse. I thought I was doing the right thing by not asking my wife of almost 20 years to work while we were raising three kids. Taking care of three children was already a full-time job. But during the divorce, that decision worked against me financially. I ended up feeling like I was being punished for supporting the arrangement we had agreed on during the marriage. The whole experience left me feeling like the system was deeply unfair and badly in need of reform.

child support should only be calculated based on a 40-hour work week. the fact that I can get penalized for working overtime to try and make up money lost due to child support is wild too though.
