@charleeremitz: Many times, I have driven through Montgomery, Alabama. Yesterday, it finally occurred to me to stop. This monument is extraordinary. It warrants its own excursion. It is so much more than a place to check out when you’re passing through. Before I leave the south, I want to hold the south in its entirety in my hands. I want to see everything, so I can understand why we continue to repeat history. Why Black teenagers are left on islands in the gulf. Why Black 20-year-olds are shot dead by the National guard in the street. Why the police kill Black infants and then lie about it after the fact. To understand, I need to see.
