@hiphopofthe90s: 39 years ago today, Eric B. & Rakim released “Paid in Full.” 💿 The album arrived on July 7, 1987 and became one of the defining projects of hip-hop’s golden era. As their debut studio album, it introduced a level of calm control, technical precision and rhyme structure that helped change how MCs approached the craft. Rakim’s delivery was different from much of what came before it. Instead of relying only on loud energy, he brought a smoother flow, internal rhyme patterns and a more measured vocal style that became a blueprint for generations of rappers after him. The album included records like “I Ain’t No Joke,” “My Melody,” “I Know You Got Soul,” “Move the Crowd,” “Eric B. Is President” and the title track “Paid in Full.” Each record helped build the duo’s reputation as one of the most important combinations of MC and DJ in rap history. Eric B.’s production and DJ work also gave the project its identity, using breaks, samples and open arrangements that left enough space for Rakim’s voice to lead the record. Nearly four decades later, “Paid in Full” is still viewed as one of the albums that helped raise the standard for lyricism, flow and presence in hip-hop.
