@abbeysmom17: Abbey is a Gestalt language processor in her Autism. She has an incredible episodic memory. But these memories can pop in her head at any time and pull her out of the current moment, making engaging in conversation very difficult. She will talk about the memory before she can access the feeling words themselves. She also puts things in categories of good and bad as a way of referencing the world. We have come up with strategies to help her access the appropriate words so that she can be understood. And just her own awareness that this is how her mind works has helped tremendously. If you have a loved one doing a lot of scripting/movie talk, etc. check out Gestalt Language processing. #abbeysautism
My daughter speaks in 90% echolalia, mostly doc mcstuffins and Mickey Mouse clubhouse. Mostly we can figure it out when she is saying things. She is a gastalt language processor. She also taught herself to read early, mostly with subtitles on the shows she watches. It’s amazing

this was probably the most educational video i’ve ever seen on tiktok. i think it’s incredible the way that abbey is able to recognize that connecting to memories turns her smart brain off and find ways to explain her emotions, but in a manner that fits her best.

I used to climb trees as a way of eloping and now as an adult when I’m upset and had to walk away from an argument I will call my dad and tell him “I’m up a tree”

As a masters level social worker, the mother is doing an amazing job. Thought she was the social worker/therapist. Guiding her and modeling and giving her real life examples to use, all while preparing her for your departure. Beautiful, beautiful 👏🏽👏🏽

And now all of a sudden I understand why my son will suddenly tell people they need a hair cut. I think I might have offended him or confused him one time when I told him he needed a haircut. Now in uncomfortable situations he says the same thing. No one has ever noticed this before. I have had a feeling he is repeating things he’s heard rather than conversations. He is 6 and waiting for an autism assessment. Thank you, really interesting.

I love how you are with her and how much she understands herself which shows a lot of work and growth in someone with Autism. My son is Autistic and is a gestalt processor as well. He is amazing and is still working hard everyday. He just graduated from high school and he starts community college in the fall. Thank you for sharing your lives with the world! Here’s my guy…

My daughter has echolalia. She doesn't say scared, or anxious, etc. Instead she'll sing a piece of a song or blurt out something seemingly random. One of her things used to be, when she was frustrated was, "and we shall have no pie!" (from the 3 little kittens, they lost their mittens song)

I always knew I thought mostly visually and through memory playbacks. People would get upset at me and say things like “why won’t you let anything from your past go?” when I am just trying to explain what I am thinking and feeling
