Maybe it’s the remarkable warmth and generosity of chef and co-owner Rekik Abaineh’s food. Maybe it’s the music: co-owner Solomon Haile (Abaineh’s husband) curates the playlist himself, a hundred hours of Ethiopian jazz, Afrobeat and pan-African rhythm that pulses at exactly the right volume. Maybe it’s the incense that gets burned whenever the ceremonial coffee service comes out. On any given night, the dining room buzzes with celebrations, birthdays, graduations or reunions. Or it could be a regular Wednesday night dinner that somehow, inevitably, becomes a special occasion. The joy at Bolé is contagious; it washes over you like a wave.
