You experience yourself in full, vivid, unbroken detail, so it feels central. Everyone else gets a thin, passing glance, already crowded out by their own worry. The audience you're performing for is barely looking up from their own script. What feels like a spotlight is mostly a mirror.   Don't read this as permission to care less about people. It's a reason to stop auditing yourself through a crowd that isn't watching.   Every harsh review you imagine is one you wrote and then assigned to them. You're not reading their minds. You're projecting your own verdict. The cruelty you're bracing for is coming from inside the room.   The same comment can wound one person and bounce off another for exactly this reason. It isn't the comment. It's whose voice you let narrate it afterward.   The harshest reviewer in any room is almost always you. You just dress the verdict up as "what they must be thinking."   Those imagined opinions are usually your own insecurity wearing borrowed faces. Nobody is running the replay of you that you are.   Four of those words are how other people read you:   — the maze they can't follow, — the mask you show, — the book they think they're reading, — the river that keeps changing on them.   Only one is you looking at yourself. The mirror is the odd one out — and it's the only verdict that ever actually hurt.
