@dr.shawna: What are the 3 main goals of higher education? Part 3 of my series on why College Is Not Just Job Training is about what education is actually for and why “college should be practical” only sounds simple until we ask, practical for whom? Let’s dig into some history ofthe purpose of public higher education and explore why the definition of a useless degree often comes down to which of those three goals people are using as their framework. #LearnOnTikTokContest #EduTok #DidYouKnow #socialscience
My education also improves my quality of life because I have a better understanding of the world I live in. That's useful to me

University, imo, gives young adults the opportunity to learn to fail safely

So glad I went to college. It’s why I’m able to do what I’m doing

Education Researcher here. Education should also be an engine that allows for self fulfillment. People come to schools/colleges with a lot of different life goals. Education spaces should be built in a way that allows for folks to find their way regardless of their goals.

It used to annoy me as a university student when other students complained about the core curriculum. They only wanted to take classes related to their major. I understand because it’s expensive folks want to cut down on requirements to get out faster but most of them it was because they thought humanities courses were beneath them.

after 6 months of a gap year and getting entrepreneur propaganda, i now want to double major and go directly into postgraduate studies because I have learnt that not everything is about money
Education changes a person in ways money could only wish to

higher education isn’t only about employment prospects. it’s largely about higher learning, being a responsible citizen, gaining perspective, developing academic skills.

My parents always told me that education is never a waste of money or time, no matter whether we “use” it or not.

The school I went to had “breadth” requirements for every student. It definitely doesn’t solve the problem but I appreciated having to be exposed to many different types of classes. I unsurprisingly work in social sciences

Education. Changed my life. Yes it helped my income but it changed how I see the world. I require my children to go to university and take diverse classes. One needs multiple perspectives to understand others and society better

Gender Studies is peopled by brainwashed Frankfurt-school-derived socialists who (for the most part) have never studied philosophy and are oblivious to their own indoctrination.

I’m working in a completely different field than my major, but I wouldn’t have gotten the job without a degree. Also, I just cherish my education. If I could, I’d go back and spend the rest of my life in college

I don’t know why they have to be competing goals. I think a good college education should provide all three

my degree is literature, theater, and linguistics. my field of work is disaster risk reduction and management. it is totally unrelated but my degree helped me better understand the world and other people and it made me a better communicator in my field of work.

I strongly believe that Education (capital E) should support the Nine Levers of the Human Condition (Economic Mobility, Intellectual Depth, Agency, Civic Capacity, Aesthetic Sensibility, Scientific Curiosity, Existential Meaning, Social Belonging, and Physical Embodiment). This is all the different parts of education (informal and formal) helping to push and pull these levers while making us cognizant of these levers. We didn't get there fully without higher education. We also don't have a functional society without education.

College should help you develop primary skills (your major) along with secondary and tertiary skills (interpersonal, time management, etc) that not only make you a more informed citizen, but can help you secure a career in a field of interest. The securing of the career may or may not provide social mobility depending on a student’s economic background.

This is a serious question: do you think more education around the different types of colleges could help fix this attitude? Like I went to a land grant university, which means the state gave them money to create a more educated workforce in fields that are “hot” at the moment. Now I teach at a liberal arts college and there’s a lot more emphasis on creating well rounded citizens. Then there’s vocational schools and community colleges which are 100% focused on creating new workers. Maybe if people knew more about how different schools have slightly different functions they’d argue less because they’d understand that you choose one that fits how you define education?

College is not university. Post-high school schooling/education is needed for a living wage and beyond.
