i think saying “average” is a bit intellectuality disingenuous. the mean or average is a summation divided by the distribution. so the extremely high earner’s could very well be augmenting the number upwards. as mode or median isn’t mentioned, it could be the case that the majority of college doesn’t really increase someone’s wage over typical established employed without a college degree.

It happens regularly. I have a grad degree in economics and people will argue with me that “they don’t {inset thing they don’t experience}” and I always have to reply “this is a measurable fact”. People don’t realize there’s exceptions to rules and those don’t make the rule invalid.

In college you learn how to understand research and most research will have 1000s of subjects. The fewer subjects of a study the less reliable the results are. An anecdote is a research study of one participant.

having a degree and using that degree is 2 completely different things. having a degree but picking a career completely different from what that degree is for is not using that degree to make money. someone using their degree to choose the correct career for which that degree is for is someone using their degree.

I also think people just want to add a differing thought to the original thought. Some of those people weren’t necessarily arguing with his statement, but most likely just adding to it to show other people you don’t need a college degree to earn a lot of money. If instead, they said, “I know that is true for the average, but keep in mind, I’m blue collar and make $220k a year… you can make a good living without a college degree”, would that be more appropriate?
