When I was a youth, I imagined a fictional device that would allow a person to "fast forward" through unpleasant experiences—like a kind of "autopilot" that can be engaged, that allows your consciousness to be suppressed and "reawakened" after the unpleasant event is over. My meditation on this hypothetical led me to imagine people "fast forwarding" through more and more, events that are less and less actually worth skipping over; finally ending with people just missing everything, "fast forwarding" through their entire lives. The sheer tragedy of this struck my teenage heart and I never forgot my little reverie about it.
