@latimes: West Hollywood isn't part of the City of Los Angeles. That might sound like a technicality, but it helped shape one of the most famous LGBTQ+ communities in the country. Why did they incorporate? Because the county had voted to remove its rent control protections in the mid-1980s, and WeHo is almost entirely home to renters. Besides passing LGBTQ protections, WeHo also passed the strongest rent control laws in the country.

This is exactly what most people don't understand. West Hollywood is indeed its own city. However, it is still in the county of Los Angeles. A lot of people get what parts of the city and what parts of the county confused a lot places like Silver Lake, Koreatown, Westwood, Venice and downtown Los Angeles. Those are all places that are part of the city of Los Angeles. But places like West Hollywood Malibu, Santa Monica Burbank, Glendale Manhattan Beach, Whittier, those are all their own individual cities within the county of Los Angeles. So it's very confusing, sometimes for people when you think of it, because everyone just kind of refers to all of it as L. A but distinctly West Hollywood is its own city within the county of Los Angeles, so it's in the Los Angeles area, but it is its own independence city.
