@up.edu.ph: “I hope that you become difficult. Difficult to fool. Difficult to buy. Difficult to discourage. And difficult to turn indifferent.” Broadcast journalist and documentary filmmaker Alfonso Tomas “Atom” Araullo addressed the University of the Philippines Baguio Class of 2026, June 30 at the Baguio Convention and Cultural Center. He urged the graduates to be “the right kind of difficult.” One who is not complicit, but questions authority, tradition, and power. In a world where injustice prevails, he said, “the difficult person is resistance.” A BS Physics graduate of UP Diliman, Araullo was a campus journalist and student leader. He has received multiple awards and recognitions for his documentary work on national affairs, social issues, human concerns, and the environment. His documentary show “The Atom Araullo Specials” won the World Gold Medal at the 2025 New York Festivals TV & Film for its episode “Pogoland," which shed light on the industry of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators. Beyond broadcast journalism, Araullo is also the co-founder of Fyt Media, a community-oriented independent media outfit. In its 24th commencement exercises, UPB conferred degrees and titles on 396 graduates across bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs, including honor graduates.
