Mine have about 1/3 of the yard to roam in. They throw a fit if I don’t let them out but then they spend like 90% of the day just lounging under the tree next to the coop.

I let my birds out a couple evenings a week weather depending. so they get like an hour or so to frolick and get bugs. 😂

I use 8x10 mobile coops. I move them almost daily. They get fresh grass and forage, but they are protected and I get all the eggs. There's very few downsides. I also keep my turkeys in mobile coops.

we use a tractor system. They're basically in a run but, they move every few weeks to new grass. Best of both worlds. They're contained, theyre on fresh grass, theyre protected and they till and fertilize our soil. They set up our garden plot each year. When we moved in it was clay and we couldn't even have a garden and now we have actual soil.

totally agree. I'm chicken sitting for a friend and he gave up his entire backyard for them not 1 piece of grass can be found its just a dirt yard and it's not a small area. they are not happy every day I bring some kind of green and they go absolutely insane for it

my chickens free range and they lay their eggs in the same place everyday, they've never gone near my garden, and the tend to just stay in/near my horse pasture that being said i have a lot of land. if you only have 2 or 3 acres or less I can see that being a problem

train them in the coop first for a few weeks and then let them free range during the day they lay eggs where they supposed to and put themselves in the coop at night

My chickens have a run like that. I let them out when I’m outside for long periods of time so I can keep an eye on them. They never fail to go to the neighbors garden lmao

👏👏👏👏👏👏 This is why mine are pinned. I have gardens for food and plants. I can’t stand chicken crap all over my porch and yard. We like to grill. I have several big pens for my chickens.
